De-Clutter your Food-Storage Areas

The holidays have come and gone, but your pantry, fridge and freezer may still have lingering visitors. Clear out your food-storage areas with these tips from de-cluttering expert Kim Cosentino, owner of Westmont-based The De-Clutter Box.


  • Discard expired items. For items you're not sure are still fresh, visit www.stilltasty.com to learn how long cooked, canned and dry foods should be kept.
  • Consider donating any of the still-good canned products to your local food bank.
  • To more easily access items otherwise pushed to the back of your fridge, consider installing a lazy Susan - larger ones designed to fit the depth of your fridge can be found online or at The Container Store.
  • Make sure each shelf and drawer has a broad but specific purpose. Consider labeling each shelf to communicate this purpose to everyone in the household.
